Cold chain logistics in Madagascar: what actually works.
Madagascar exports high-value temperature-sensitive goods: vanilla, seafood, pharmaceuticals. The cold chain infrastructure exists but has real gaps. Here is what works, what fails, and how to plan around it.
Why cold chain matters
Temperature failures cost more than the freight.
A container of vanilla beans worth $200,000 can lose half its value from a temperature excursion during transit. A seafood shipment that arrives warm is a total loss. The cost of getting cold chain right is a fraction of the cost of getting it wrong.
Madagascar's main temperature-sensitive exports are vanilla from the SAVA region, seafood (shrimp, fish) from coastal processors, and pharmaceutical imports destined for hospitals and pharmacies. Each has different temperature requirements and different failure points in the supply chain.

Several private operators maintain temperature-controlled warehouses in the Antananarivo industrial zone. Capacity ranges from small walk-in rooms to multi-chamber facilities for different product categories. The best facilities offer 24/7 monitoring and backup generators.
First-mile gaps
The weakest link in the chain is getting product from farms in SAVA, the northwest coast, or southern regions to consolidation points in Antananarivo or Toamasina. Insulated trucks and ice-based systems are common, but temperature control is inconsistent. This is where most temperature excursions occur.
Inland distribution
Last-mile delivery from Antananarivo cold storage to pharmacies, hospitals, and retail outlets uses refrigerated vans and insulated boxes. Coverage is limited outside major urban centres. The road network from Toamasina to Antananarivo (RN2, 370km) takes 8-12 hours by truck.
Temperature monitoring
Real-time visibility is now standard.
GPS-enabled temperature loggers record conditions throughout transit. IoT sensors transmit real-time data to cloud dashboards, allowing shippers and consignees to monitor temperatures from departure to arrival. When temperatures deviate from the set range, alerts trigger automatically.

The provider who can show you temperature logs from previous shipments, demonstrate their excursion response protocol, and explain their backup power arrangements is the one worth working with. Price matters, but a cheap cold chain that fails is the most expensive option.
